Occasionally in life you’re given an unlikely reprieve. Something bad that was meant to be didn’t happen. It’s an unusual feeling. Your body is taught and tired while your mind sends it a message to be free.
This contrast is really what makes the title track from Zombeaches debut album, Cheers to the Future, something clutch-able. It’s rough and bare. Iconically Australian. Tacit and sharp. But James Young weaves a monotonous, emotional droll very beautifully around a band that is drilled and together and pushing everything right to the front.
Because of this dynamic between the intense nature of the story and the heavy, lead foot music - it feels like what it’s saying. You feel a sense of someone whose been given a reprieve. You understand that if, prepared for someone you love to die, but then told no, you might experience a sense of being born again.
Cheers to the Future was written by Nick Krstic, James Young, and Jay Gargaro, and recorded in a sailing club close to home in Victoria, looking out over Western Port Bay towards bass strait. Recorded in a single take with no overdubs, about a moment that is simultaneously the end of a great struggle and a rebirth.
In such a hard time it’s nice to hear a band say, in the context of their lives, Cheers to the Future.
lyrics
The clouds arrive and cover over the breathing city floor
Picks out every single hand
One by one by one by one
Im so alive
Theres so much more
And you tell me I won’t live Forever
Cut me I’m clean
Wash me I’ll bleed
Cheers to the future
I got all that I need
One chance to gather all my strength and take me back to my old young self again
The clouds pass by and reveal the city lights
A new face, a new walk, a new shot at life
A new face, a new walk, a new shot at life
A new place a new place a new
Cut me I’m clean
Wash me I’ll bleed
Cheers to the future
I got all that I need
I want to feel sun
I want to feel light
I want to taste everything you put into life
I want to feel safe
I want to feel at home
I want to feel loved when Im on my own
I want to feel sun
I want to feel light
A new face, a new walk, a new shot at life
A new face, a new walk, a new shot at life
